Lizzo Twerked While Playing the Flute and Tore The House Down; Mary J. Blige with Method Man and Lil' Kim Took Us Back to the 411; Regina Hall does Coachella and More!
If you missed last night’s 2019 BET awards, fear not. We have a rundown of the most fire moments of the 19th-annual music and film awards. Let's get at it! #BETAwards
Regina Hall & Taraji P. Henson Bring “Da Butt”- #DontMuteDC
A stage full of “Da Butt”, Regina Hall doing a Coachella style walk down the runway, along with Taraji P. Henson, kicked off the 19th annual BET awards accompanied by a marching band, and a trip back to 1988, had the entire house on it's feet.
Live from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles,Regina Hall started the show with one of the most entertaining and memorable performances I’ve ever witnessed of a BET awards host. Imitating Beyonce during her behind the scenes moments of the Netflix documentary, “Homecoming”, with a full-blown marching band, and Sugar Bear, from the Go-Go band E.U., performing “Da Butt”, which by the way was a pivotal part of the School Daze Movie and Soundtrack. (That's not up for debate). Had me on my feet! If you didn't lose your mind when Taraji came out with the biker shorts and fanny pack, you have no soul.
The entire performance had social media lit this morning. It wasn’t by accident either. The D.C. Native stressed the importance of her hometown to the dancers in her performance as a part of the #DontMuteDC movement, that started as a battle over gentrification in the nation’s capital. The problem is systemic within the country's largest cities and relatable to every urban community across the states.

Lizzo Twerked While Playing the Flute & Tore The House Down!
As if Regina Hall and Taraji P. Henson weren’t enough, Lizzo tore the house down during her energized performance of “Truth Hurts." How? By playing the flute and twerking...duh!
In an interview with NPR, she made it quite clear what the goal of her flute playing is.
“You just wait until this nerd gets into hip-hop. I will make everybody love the flute again.”
So who is Lizzo exactly? Well, aside from being a chart-topping hip hop artist setting the world on fire right now, she is also a classically trained flutist. Whoop! You go, girl! Did I mention that she twerks, plays the flute AND does a full-blown, choreographed dance routine without missing a note? I can't even walk in the kitchen without getting short winded. Talk about #BlackGirlMagic!
It seems I’m not the only one who enjoyed her performance. This lady is definitely someone to keep your eyes on.
Mary J. Blige with Method Man and Lil Kim Took Us Back to the 411, and I was "Living My Best Life".
Nobody:
Me: "Mary's getting ready to come on!" Runs upstairs, puts on high heeled boots and does a lil two step back down the stairs.
That was my whole mood getting ready for Mary J. Blige's award and performance of her hits from the 411 LP, with special guest appearances by Method Man and Lil Kim. It was a full blown concert in my living room last night. She literally did a tribute to her own career, as she performed in honor of receiving the BET lifetime achievement award.
Did I mention how fine Method Man has gotten at the age of 48? Well, let me tell you, he was looking like a whole snack last night, ripped arms, clean shave and a voice like melted butter as he made an appearance to perform his and Mary’s iconic 1995 hig, “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By”. He’s still got it, and from the moment he appeared at the top of the stairs the crowd went wild. You can watch the performance on BET here.
At one point during the performance, Lil Kim — wearing aviator sunglasses — jumped on stage to perform “I Can Love You,” which comes from Mary's 1997 album, Share My World.
Mary was presented her award by Rihanna, who Mary attributes to her inspiration, as Sean P-Diddy Combs and her family watched from the front row.
“Although I am a leader, a queen, a living legend, although I'm all these things I'm a servant as well and I'm here to serve. Being a servant is not always glamorous or popular but it's the job and the assignment that I was given. In order to be in authority, I had to learn how to come under authority. When the glory is placed on me, I give it back to God. This journey has always been bigger than me." She also performed, Real Love,” “My Life,” and “No More Drama.” As I said, she gave a concert!
Long live the Queen of R&B! #WhatsThe411
P.S. Did I mention how fine Method Man is? No?
Nipsey Hussle Receives an All-Star Tribute & The Humanitarian Award. Did You Know He Also Won Male Hip Hop Artist?
Were you also aware that in addition to Nipsey's posthumous humanitarian award and emotional tribute film, the slain rapper was also awarded best male hip-hop artist. An honor he surely would have reveled in had he still been alive.
Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was killed in front of his Marathon clothing store in March of this year, by Eric Holder. the BET awards was certainly on point this year in terms of bringing the funny, the fire and the tears. This part of the show was not aired on television, and neither was the best female hip hop award category, despite several of the nominees being in attendance, according to LA Times music writer, Gerrick D. Kennedy.
Congratulations to all the winners in best male and female hip hop award category. You can see the full list of winners in each category listed below.
Cardi B and Offset "Clout":
Cardi B knows how to get it done! The 26-year old rapper definitely set the stage, no pun intended, for the awards show as she opened with a lap dance for her husband Offset, while performing her hit single, "Press" and "Clout". She looked absolutely beautiful in her green sparkling outfit, before closing her set with a choreographed dance routine with some of the baddest back up dancers I've ever seen. The mom of one won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Album of the Year for "Invasion of Privacy".
It's been a week of highs and lows for Cardi, who was indicted by a grand jury in Queens, New York, this past Friday, connected to misdemeanor charges stemming from an August altercation at a strip club. We wish her well in her ensuing court battles, but as long as she keeps delivering fire like she did Sunday night, she can count on us to stan!
Cardi took home the Album of the Year for her 2018 debut LP, Invasion of Privacy. Congratulations Diva, as a single mother, she started from the bottom now she's here!
Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas:
So who besides myself did not know that Billy Cyrus graduated from the historically black college, Howard University? (Insert jaw drop emoji). Well he did. When Regina mentioned it last night, I like many others, immediately took to Google and was stunned to learn the comedian host, was not making a joke. I totally have a different perspective and I now understand Myley, his daughter, just a little bit better.
Cyrus and Nas' cowboy themed performance began in a magnificent style, with Cyrus and Nas, 20, arriving to the venue via horseback before wowing the crowd with an epic performance of their hit track. Nas rocked a yellow-and-black open jacket look complete with tassels and matching pants, while Cyrus kept it casual in jeans, a leather jacket and a cowboy hat.
Nas previously celebrated the success of his track, that has amazingly remained at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks, by surprising his singer partner with a red Maserati GranTurismo convertible, a reference to lyrics in the song. Whoa! I guess it was a success eh sir?
For Cyrus, being at the BET Awards was something he considered an honor and vowed to always remember.
"It was just such an honor being here," he said. "And being a part of this festival and these festivities and this celebration of music. It'll be a moment that I'll always cherish and remember. It was very special."
The whole crowd was singing along with every word to this performance and it had Cyrus wishing he was back in the limelight again! Keep making hits like this sir, and we can make that happen!
This was absolutely one of the most amazing nights in black excellence. Don't forget to check out Tyler Perry's emotional and much needed speech and advice, while receiving the Ultimate Icon award; The Exonerated 5 formerly known the Central Park 5 getting a standing ovation; Snoop Dogg winning the Dr. Bobby Jones gospel award; John Singleton's tribute, and more at this year's 2019 annual BET awards show.
