Hi guys! If you’re reading this then you have officially become a Ragged Fashion reader! All you have to do now, if you haven’t already, is subscribe and become a member of the squad! Now, let’s get into how I was able to style Keke Palmer for New Years weekend.
Around November of 2016, I had finally decided that I wanted to get into the fashion industry and learn everything that I possibly could. I went out looking for internships everyday and also applied to a lot of retail jobs online. I have been working in retail for at least two years around that time. So, while I had been applying almost EVERYWHERE, I went on Instagram and started searching different fashion stylists. *Instagram is a great tool to use for networking and quick gigs* I then came across this one particular stylist and at the time he was an upcoming stylist himself.
I saw that he had been working with Keke Palmer for some time and he was doing a great job styling her too. This was around the time when Keke Palmer was all over the fashion media with her killer looks that she had been serving! It’s so crazy how things that are meant for you will happen no matter what. So, in November when I made my decision, Keke was one of the celebrities that I looked up to as far as acting *Yes, I also wanted to be an actress*, I DM’d her on Instagram just to see if she would respond:
Unfortunately, she did not respond but who would have known that next month I would be working with her and actually styling her! God! Okay, so back to the story, I reached out to her fashion stylist at the moment via Instagram in December and asked if he was in need of assistance. Even though I knew they were not in Miami, I thought it was worth a try. Surprisingly, he responded two days later and said that he wants to do an over-the-phone interview with me. I was like “Okay cool”, it seemed like forever he took to call me but I remained patient. He finally called me and asked me a few questions, nothing too intense, then he casually said that she would be flying into Miami, he would not be able to come that weekend, so he needs me to help put together outfits with the clothes he sends for her.
At this point, I’m on the phone and my jaw is to the floor. Like, I could not believe he was actually sending me by myself to work with Keke Palmer. This was the first gig I ever had in styling and I was a bit nervous because I was actually going to be styling a real celebrity! Like, I love her, I was too ecstatic and could not breathe lol! So, he gave me all the extra details and when I got off the phone with him, I ran into my mom’s room and told her all about it! At first, she did not believe me but I honestly did not care because the next day I was going to be out that door so fast and on my way to Keke lol!
The next day came and I had to be at her hotel early like 6am EARLY! So, I got there, did everything I was suppose to do, and waited for her to check in. When she walked in the room, I was not as star struck as I thought I would be but she hugged me as if I was family! Guys, she is honestly the sweetest, most down to earth person I have ever met! But anyway, I ended up working with her from Friday to Sunday, pretty much putting outfits together for her to wear out in the town. These were the three that I put together for her: *Y’all see Quincy fine self*
I had a blast working with her and she also left me with some valuable gems that I rather keep to myself for now. One thing that I would say, I learned from that experience is whatever is meant for you will manifest. Also, no matter what work you are doing always provide good work ethics and because of the work ethic I had with her, it opened up a few opportunities for me. So, for all of you guys that are trying to reach your goals, do not give up! I am still in the process of learning and growing but experiencing opportunities such as that one gave me hope that something greater is in store for me. Which was true because after Keke, I was fortunate to work with a couple of great celebrities.
Bottom Line
Whatever you are trying to do in life, go for it! Remember to have fun and grow every day, build that self love so that when you get out there in the real deal holy field, you will already be grounded in yourself and actually have something to bring to the table. The way that you present yourself is EVERYTHING from the clothes you wear to your personality. Also, do not be afraid to take on those opportunities and new tasks, you do not want to live with that “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve“ guilt!
